Start with the duvet inside. A straightforward guide to checking dimensions, choosing coverage and finding a cover that fits.

Duvet Cover Sizes Explained: How to Choose the Right Fit

Choosing a duvet cover becomes easier when you begin with the duvet you already own. Its dimensions determine the cover size, even when the mattress underneath has a different name or measurement.

Before choosing a colour or weave, find the label on the duvet and note its width and length in centimetres. Those two numbers are your starting point.

Match the cover to the duvet

A duvet labelled 155 × 220 cm calls for a cover with the same stated dimensions. Extra fabric around a smaller duvet can gather at the edges; a cover that is too small can prevent the filling from lying evenly.

Check both measurements. A cover with the right width can still be the wrong length.

If the duvet's label is missing, lay it flat without stretching and measure across its width and along its length. Compare those measurements with the manufacturer's information if you can identify the product.

Use measurements when shopping across countries

Terms such as single, double, queen and king vary between markets and brands. They can help describe a range, but the centimetre measurements are the reliable point of comparison.

This matters particularly when the duvet and cover come from different countries. Check the numbers even if the size names appear to match.

The Brut Studios duvet-cover range includes these dimensions; availability varies by product:

Cover dimensions Matching duvet dimensions
140 × 200 cm 140 × 200 cm
155 × 220 cm 155 × 220 cm
200 × 200 cm 200 × 200 cm
240 × 220 cm 240 × 220 cm

Think about coverage when choosing a new duvet

If you are buying the duvet as well as the cover, consider how you use the bed. Mattress width, the amount of overhang you enjoy and whether you share a duvet all affect your preference.

Two individual duvets give each person a separate layer. One larger duvet creates a continuous surface across the bed. Both arrangements can work; choose the duvet first, then match the cover to it.

Check the other pieces separately

A fitted sheet follows the mattress dimensions and its depth, including any topper. A pillowcase follows the pillow. These measurements are independent of the duvet-cover size, so check every component when putting together a set.

Before ordering, keep a short note of your duvet, mattress and pillow dimensions. With the fit settled, you can spend more time choosing the fabric and colour you want to live with.
