Amsterdam architect Rik Frans Jansen invited us to dress PLATFORM, his new steel and aluminium bed, at Paris Design Week. Here is how our sateen met the metal.

This September, we had the chance to take part in Paris Design Week.

Amsterdam architect and designer Rik Frans Jansen invited us to dress PLATFORM, his new bed, for its first presentation at GOOD SELECTION, an exhibition organised by designer Lucas Zito. We said yes straight away.

The bed

PLATFORM is built like a small piece of architecture. An aluminium frame, clad in bolted stainless-steel panels, lifts the bed off the floor and sets it apart from the rest of the room. The materials come from building construction, the kind usually hidden behind walls and ceilings. Rik leaves them visible: the joints, the bolts, the ends of the profiles.

It is a hard, cold, precise object. That is what made it interesting to us.

Our part

From the start, Brut has treated the bed as a room within the room, a small architecture of its own. PLATFORM took that idea literally, so we wanted the textiles to do the opposite of the metal: soften it and bring some movement into it.

We chose our 600-thread-count sateen, made from extra-long-staple Egyptian cotton, in two colours: Ashen Stone and Concrete Blue. Both echo the tones of the steel. Next to the panels, the drape of the cotton became the point.

"For me, the soft, gentle drape of the cotton sateen was the perfect complement to the harsh, rigid design of the PLATFORM bed," says Rik. "It is a collaboration in which material, colour and feel complement and elevate one another."

For us

We launched Brut in Berlin this year. Seeing our bedding in Paris, on an object like this, among designers we admire, was one of the first moments where the idea behind the brand felt clear to other people too.

Thank you to Rik for the invitation, to Lucas Zito for hosting GOOD SELECTION, and to Nam Seung Rok for the photographs.
